There once existed a small business known as the Union Metallic Cartridge Company, who opened up a location on the east end of Bridgeport, CT in 1867. They existed as a result of the increasing ownership of guns after the Civil War, and the expanding need for bullets. The company was later merged with Remington Arms, a company who transformed the small shop into a large 73 acre manufacturing complex to help support WWI. After that expansion in 1915 they became one of the biggest munitions factories in the world, employing over 17,000 workers and literally producing tons of ammunition and weapons each year for domestic and military use.
The bustling complex wasn’t only known for its munitions and economic boost to society, but for its rare “accidents” leading to the death of multiple workers. Accidents which included three different workers falling into a pot of molten metal and hundreds of rounds accidentally going off and injuring employees. On April 4, 1905, 3 men were killed when an explosion blew one of the 38 buildings to pieces. Lead dust from the bullets filled the factory and slowly poisoned those with prolonged contact. The worst of these accidents occurred in 1942, when another large explosion on the production floor killed 7 employees and injured 80-100 more. Said to have been wartime sabotage, workers blamed the incident on domestic terrorists and war protesters.
Eventually in 1970, in an effort to save on costs, the factory moved a majority of the production from Connecticut to Arkansas. They later abandoned the entire facility in 1988. Other companies such as GE have tried to come in and use the location, but have only been able to limit its use to warehouse space, leaving much of the property to rot.
With such a haunting history, its not surprising that this location is filled with ghosts and lost souls. It’s said that the seven workers who perished in the explosion have become ghostly shadows, following guests around and looking out the windows for people to come and visit. Almost all visitors who pass the barbed wire fence report hearing disembodied voices and feeling a sense of dread. Among these people is the Ghost Adventures Crew who investigated the location during season 3 and uncovered multiple EVP’s, photos, and video evidence as a support of the hauntings.
