In the town of Cornwall, CT lies a lost village with a cursed history. Between the mountains, valleys and rivers lies a town with so many ghost, demon, horror and scary stories that it has brought in paranormal investigators from all around the country. It’s the ghost village known only as Dudleytown. The town and it’s buildings no longer exist, but the stories continue.
The Curse
Dudleytown was originally founded by Thomas Griffis in 1745, but was named after the three Dudley brothers who inhabited the land a few years later. Yet, this story goes back to 1510 in England, where Edmund Dudley(a descendant of the brothers) was beheaded by King Henry VIII for plotting to overthrow him. When he was killed, a curse was allegedly placed on the Dudley family for their treason. The curse has haunted the entire family for generations.
Dudleytown was not actually its own separate town, but rather a branch of Cornwall where lots of “Dudleys” lived. Although located in a cold, mountain shadowed rocky land mass, the colonists attempted to use the land for farming. They moved multiple rocks, using them for the bases of many of the town buildings. This lead to a promising start for the town which quickly took a turn for the worse.
The town was plagued with multiple pitfalls during its lifespan. Many residents were diagnosed with dementia causing functioning issues and early deaths. There were also multiple rumored attacked from Native Americans. One such attack included a family who attempted to move away into New York. After the move, the family was attacked, killing the mother and father and kidnapping the children. Other incidences include people struck by lightening, fires, destroyed houses, suicides, missing children, more death and the demise of General Heman Swift, a previous resident, who lost his bid for presidency. As the crops began to die, the citizens abandoned hope and the town in 1899.
The Dark Entry Society
In 1920 a doctor by the name of William Clark visited the land and fell in love with the surroundings. He built a property on the land and brought with him his family. While out on business, he heard news that his wife was in trouble. After rushing home as quick as he could, he came home to the sight of his wife gone completely insane. She claimed that something in the forest attacked her, that something was not right and that they couldn’t stay there. She would spend the remainder of her life in a mental institution.
William Clark helped to found the Dark Entry Society who currently owns the land and ensures it stays off limits to all civilians. They once allowed the Warrens to investigate the property on Halloween in the early 1970’s where they concluded that the land was in fact cursed and contained multiple “demons”. They still claim that the land is one of the most haunted locations they have ever investigated. While the curse is still said to ensue, no further documented occurrences have been recorded. That doesn’t stop us as well as countless readers from believing the curse is real. As you move the up the mountain the sound of bugs and birds seems to disappear. The air gets thick and a strange, evil feeling comes over the body. It’s not a happy place to be and it is no wonder the land is said to be cursed. Readers and locals told us of their travels, their bad luck and the strange things which continue to happen. Its said to be the most haunted place in not only Connecticut, but the entire north east.
Note: The land is private and is considered off guards to everyone. The police strictly enforce this and will ticket anyone who trespasses.
